Interview with Tanya Thompson from Thinkfun Games

Thinkfun is mostly known for their puzzles – notably Rush Hour – but they’ve also been devloping several board games recently.  At the T&GCon Blog, Tanya Thompson, in charge of product development at ThinkFun, talks about how to make a good pitch to a game company.

Getting the right idea in front of the right person

Thompson says the biggest hurdle faced by inventors is getting the right idea in front of the right person.  “It’s hard work.  I have so much respect for inventors.  I don’t know how they do it,” she says.

The professionals Thompson knows work hard at getting their games placed.  “It’s not just about having a great idea. They’re typically the creative types anyway so they already have lots of great ideas, but it’s showing the right idea to the right person.”

“And that takes research, networking, smarts and patience,” she continues, “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve met with a new inventor and they answer ‘no’ when I ask them if they know our game Rush Hour.  What?  That’s ThinkFun’s most popular game and it tells a lot about us!  If they don’t know that, I feel they haven’t done their research and likely aren’t going to show me games that are right for our company.”

Be organized, and know your game inside and out

Thompson is emphatic about an inventor’s need to be organized, and that they really know their game before pitching it. 

“The worst thing they can do is waste their time.  Sometimes we will only have 30 minutes together, maybe less, and I likely have back-to-back meetings planned.  So make your time count,” she says.  “The best ‘pitchers’ I know that have multiple ideas to show me are efficient and concise.  They have a book of pitch sheets with particular games flagged that they know could be right for ThinkFun.”
